Commercial Project Profile

Piedmont Housing Alliance: Kindlewood Buildings 1-3

Client: Piedmont Housing Alliance
Location: Charlottesville, VA
Completion: September 2025

Tiger Solar partnered with Piedmont Housing Alliance (PHA), a Charlottesville based nonprofit dedicated to creating and preserving affordable housing, to deliver solar solutions for multi-family housing at Kindlewood (formerly Friendship Court). The project supports PHA’s broader commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and reducing long-term operating costs for affordable housing communities. As part of the Kindlewood redevelopment, sustainability, resilience, and reduced utility burdens are key priorities – making solar a natural fit for the community. By implementing renewable energy solutions in affordable housing, this partnership helps advance environmentally responsible development while supporting the needs of residents and the surrounding community.

The installation across Buildings 1 to 3 included a 189.2-kilowatt system utilizing a total of 440 modules paired with 225 inverters, installed using a ballast racking approach. Installing solar within an active multi-family community required detailed planning and coordination to ensure efficient execution, installation, and minimal disruption to residents from project start to finish.

The completed installation at Kindlewood delivers meaningful environmental benefits while supporting a more sustainable and resilient community for residents. Based on PVWatts modeling, the system is projected to generate approximately 240,000-250,000-kilowatt-hours annually, significantly offsetting electricity usage across the property. For multi-family housing communities, this level of production supports reduced operating costs, improved energy efficiency, and long-term savings that can be reinvested into resident services and property improvements. The system ultimately supports healthier, more sustainable living environments as PHA continues to demonstrate how renewable energy can drive both community impact and environmental responsibility.
