What is the Big Beautiful Bill?

The Big Beautiful Bill is legislation signed into law by President Donald Trump on July 4, 2025. In it are several provisions that change the landscape of the solar industry as we currently know it. Though the changes are substantial, we at Tiger Solar are committed to continuing to provide quality solar systems in Virginia.

What is changing for residential solar in Virginia with the Big Beautiful Bill?

The Federal Solar Tax Credit will end at the end of 2025. Currently Virginia residents can apply for a 30% federal tax credit for their residential solar system. Instead of ending in 2034, the residential solar tax credit will end December 31, 2025.

What if I built my solar system in Virginia before the Big Beautiful Bill was passed?

If you purchased a solar system in Virginia before the passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, you will still be able to apply for the 30% Federal Solar Tax Credit.

Will I get the 30% Federal Solar Tax Credit if I buy a solar system in 2025 in Virginia?

This is the area of the bill with the least amount of clarity. Here are a few scenarios:

  1. If you purchase and pay for your solar system in Virginia in 2025 and it is commissioned or turned on before the EOY 2025 then you will receive the 30% Federal Tax Credit.
  2. If you purchase and pay for your solar system in Virginia in 2025, but it does not receive permission to operate (PTO) from your power provider, we do not yet have clarity on whether you will receive the 30% Federal Tax Credit.
  3. If you purchase and pay for your solar system in Virginia in 2025, but you have not yet completed your solar system installation by the EOY 2025, we do not yet have clarity on whether you will receive the 30% Federal Tax Credit.
  4. If you purchase and pay for your solar system in Virginia in 2025 and it is commissioned or turned on before the EOY 2025 then you will receive the 30% Federal Tax Credit—if you do not have enough tax liability to take advantage of the entire 30% tax credit, we do not yet know if you can roll this over until the following tax year (as was previously available).

Rest assured, we are working along with our colleagues both in the solar industry and within the green industry sector to continue to flesh out the details here. We also encourage you to consult with a tax professional to better understand the letter of the law here.

With that in mind, should you have been considering solar, it may be time to finalize details with a sense of urgency, to ensure you are in the construction queue as soon as possible.

How does the Big Beautiful Bill impact Virginia tax incentives?

The Big Beautiful Bill does not have any impact on Virginia State solar system tax incentives. In addition, the Big Beautiful Bill doesn’t not have any impact on any Virginia city or county solar tax incentives.

What can be future avenues for purchasing solar in Virginia after the Big Beautiful Bill?

Currently, our understanding of the Big Beautiful Bill is that solar system leases in Virginia are still an option for Virginia homeowners interested in solar.

What does this have to do with Federal Tax Credits? If you secure a lease in Virginia for a solar system from a company, that company can apply for and receive the 30% Federal Solar Tax credit as a commercial tax credit. In theory, this would allow the savings to trickle down to the Virginia homeowner in the form of the overall leasing terms.

The same benefits remain for Virginia homeowners, in the form of lower energy bills and long-term energy independence. Along with the added benefit of not having to outlay a large upfront sum.

I purchased a solar system in Virginia before the Big Beautiful Bill. Will I still be able to take advantage of SRECS?

The Big Beautiful Bill does not impact Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECS) in Virginia. Whether you invested in solar in 2025, or well before then, Virginia homeowners are still able to participate in SREC markets.

Has your pricing for solar in Virginia changed now that the Big Beautiful Bill has been passed?
