Five Ways to Spot the Solar Scams

I‘ve served clients custom built solar in the Treasure Valley for over 10 years and was glad to see Idaho Power and the Idaho Attorney General, Lawrence Wasden, raising awareness on an uptick in scammers, knocking on customers’ doors and selling residential solar systems with false promises. I have seen the market grow from just a few of us doing one installation a time, to over 100 companies. It has been sad to see the scammers come with the growth and there’s a good chance if you live in a hot market for rooftop solar, like Boise, Idaho, that you’ve had a salesperson knock on your door.

Solar is not a decision that you should make at the ring of a doorbell. A trusted solar contractor will never pressure you into a sale and they’ll be more than happy to answer your questions. Our solar process begins and ends with our loyal customers. That’s why we want to provide you with the right resources to make an investment that will last a lifetime.

Here are five ways to spot the scams:

  1. Watch for people posing as utility and government workers

Fraud often begins with doorknockers pretending to work for the government or utility companies. Ask for proof of ID and check independently.

  1. Be aware of unrealistic prices

Avoid representatives that promise to eliminate your energy bill without paying a dime for the solar system. To avoid getting caught in the sales trap, we recommend securing quotes from several competitors to get a feel for how much solar panel installations cost in the Treasure Valley.

  1. Stay away from leasing panels and hidden fees in financing

Some installers may advertise “free” solar panels as part of the contract. This is essentially a long-term lease agreement, and your money isn’t going towards the purchase of the system. This means you won’t get the full benefits of your investment. If you don’t purchase your solar panels, you won’t be able to receive any of the tax benefits of purchasing solar, and there won’t be any value added to your home.

Instead of leasing, consider financing options. Make sure to review the loan term. Companies will often add 20-30% in their quote to make that “dream cash flow work”. Maybe this works best for your situation, but you should be fully informed of what’s in the numbers. Our pricing is transparent and features both cash and financing options.

  1. Avoid fast moving, pushy sales reps and don’t sign anything right away

A reputable solar company will first and foremost, visit your home, assess your property, and provide a custom solar simulation. Avoid companies who provide quotes on the spot and consider a “free estimate” to be the contract. Any contract you sign should be transparent and easy to understand.

  1. Review equipment quality and warranties

You should know what you are buying, including the type of solar panels and inverters. Make sure to work with a solar company that offers a workmanship warranty and honors the manufacturer’s warranty. We offer a 10-year workmanship warranty, which guarantees that you’ll have a high-functioning solar energy system for years to come.
